One company, connected questions

Keep the accounting
meaning in view.

Review the textbook →

The textbook follows financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing questions through a consistent synthetic business environment. Charles River connects business processes and source evidence to subledgers and the general ledger, so the analytical work stays connected to the records that produced it.

Excel, SQL, and Power BI offer complementary ways to prepare data, query relationships, investigate results, and communicate findings. Applied exercises and integrated cases support a course built around accounting questions rather than isolated software commands.

Choose the depth and sequence that suit your course objectives. You can emphasize accounting foundations, develop one tool in more detail, or combine the tools in a broader analytical workflow.

Suggested semester frameworks

Two formats.
The same connected foundation.

Both pathways contain 14 instructional weeks. These are adaptable teaching frameworks; detailed schedules and sample syllabi are being prepared.

Undergraduate pathway

14 weeks · 2 weekly meetings of 100 minutes each

Before class
Before class, students read selected textbook sections, review the company and its data, and prepare with a public tutorial or practice activity.
During class
Use the two meetings to connect a guided accounting demonstration with supported practice, applied exercises, and a discussion of what the evidence means. Adjust the pace and depth to students' accounting and technology preparation.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Frame an accounting question and explain how business records connect to the ledger.
  • Prepare and analyze data with Excel, SQL, and Power BI at an appropriate depth.
  • Explain analytical findings and document the evidence supporting a decision.

Detailed undergraduate weekly plan: in development.

Graduate pathway

14 weeks · One weekly meeting of 3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes)

Before class
Before the weekly meeting, students complete selected readings and tool preparation, inspect relevant data, and arrive ready to discuss an accounting question.
During class
The longer meeting supports integrated analytical applications, collaborative exercises, case-based analysis, and project work. Give greater attention to assumptions, professional judgment, alternative explanations, and the communication of recommendations.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Integrate accounting knowledge, business processes, and analytical methods.
  • Evaluate data quality, analytical choices, and the limitations of supporting evidence.
  • Defend a professional recommendation through collaborative case and project work.

Detailed graduate weekly plan: in development.

A broad teaching sequence

Use the textbook's progression as a starting point, then adapt it to your students and course. These stages do not assign chapters to particular weeks or prescribe assessment weights.

For verified instructors

A teaching library
being brought together.

In development

Existing instructor notes and solutions are being prepared for migration from the book. They will join the teaching materials we are developing in a restricted Google Drive library.

Access requests are open now. The library is not yet a complete teaching package, and approval does not imply immediate availability of every resource below. Materials will be identified individually as they become ready.

Chapter teaching notes and preparation guidesBeing prepared for migration
Existing instructor notes are being prepared for migration from the book into the restricted library. Additional preparation and lecture delivery guidance is in development.
Worked exercise and case solutionsBeing prepared for migration
Existing instructor solutions are being prepared for migration from the book. The library will bring them together with the teaching materials under development.
Undergraduate and graduate weekly teaching plansIn development
Detailed plans for the two semester formats, with preparation and classroom delivery guidance, are being developed. Final weekly assignments have not been published here.
Grading rubrics and assessment resourcesIn development
Grading rubrics and instructor assessment support are being developed alongside the chapter and case teaching materials.
Editable teaching filesIn development
Relevant editable files will accompany the teaching resources as they are prepared and reviewed for instructor distribution.

The public textbook and learning resources retain their applicable open licenses. Separately managed instructor resources follow the terms stated with each resource; moving a previously openly licensed file does not revoke permissions already granted.

Evaluation is welcome

Request instructor access.

You do not need a confirmed textbook adoption to apply. Requests from instructors evaluating, planning to adopt, or already using the book are welcome.

Request Instructor Access ↗ (opens in a new tab)
  1. Submit your application

Complete the Google Form with your institutional contact information, teaching role, course context, and resources of interest.

  2. Eligibility is reviewed manually

Institutional email and confirmation of teaching responsibilities normally support verification. An optional faculty directory or institutional profile can help. There is no promised approval timeframe.

  3. Receive access instructions after approval

Approved faculty will receive instructions for the restricted Google Drive library as materials become available. Google Groups will manage verified instructor membership. Administrators will help resolve access arrangements when an institutional email is not associated with a Google account.

Application information supports eligibility review and access administration. Responses are handled through Google Forms and Sheets; this public website does not collect or store them. Read the Hub privacy overview .

Common adoption questions

Before you build your course.

Is the Accounting Analytics textbook free?

Yes. The early-release web textbook and PDF, EPUB, and DOCX editions are free to access. You can evaluate the public textbook and Charles River resources without purchasing, registering, or requesting instructor access. The official First Edition release remains scheduled for January 18, 2027.

Must I commit to adoption before requesting access?

No. Instructors evaluating the textbook, planning an adoption, or already teaching with it may apply. Explain your intended course and the resources you would like to review; a confirmed adoption is not required.

Who qualifies for restricted instructor resources?

Access is intended for verified instructors with teaching responsibilities who are evaluating or using the material. Review normally uses an institutional email address and confirmation of the teaching role. An optional faculty directory or institutional profile can support verification. Every request is reviewed manually.

What software do students need?

The textbook uses Excel, SQL, and Power BI. Requirements depend on the chapters and activities you select. Review the public tool guides and textbook preparation guidance, then confirm your institution's software access and students' device compatibility before assigning work. The Power BI browser appendix provides an additional teaching reference.

Can I use the book in undergraduate and graduate courses?

Yes. Both suggested pathways use the same textbook and dataset. The undergraduate framework pairs guided demonstrations with supported practice across two weekly meetings. The graduate framework uses a longer weekly meeting for integrated applications, professional judgment, collaboration, and case or project work. You can adjust depth and sequence to your learning objectives; detailed semester plans are being prepared.

How does the Charles River dataset support teaching?

Charles River provides a consistent synthetic company whose business processes, source records, subledgers, and general ledger can be examined across accounting topics. Students can return to the same business environment as they prepare data in Excel, query related records with SQL, and build models and reports in Power BI.

How will I receive materials after approval?

Approved faculty will receive instructions for accessing a restricted Google Drive library as materials become available. Verified instructor membership will be managed through Google Groups. The library is currently in development, and requesting or receiving approval does not mean that a complete package is ready. No approval or delivery timeframe has been established.

What if my institutional email is not a Google account?

Use your institutional email for the application and explain the access issue when contacted. An administrator will confirm which Google-account or organization-supported visitor-sharing option is available. Google Group membership alone does not guarantee access for an address without a Google account; do not submit a second application solely to change accounts.

May I adapt the public educational materials?

The textbook is CC BY-SA 4.0 unless otherwise noted, and Charles River has its own stated CC BY-SA 4.0 terms. These licenses permit adaptation subject to their conditions, including attribution and ShareAlike where applicable. Check the license attached to each resource. Separately managed instructor resources have their own stated terms; moving a previously openly licensed file into a restricted library does not revoke rights already granted under its public license.

How are the open textbook and instructor library different?

The open textbook, dataset, public tutorials, and student practice remain available for independent evaluation and learning. Instructor notes, solutions, and the developing teaching package are being brought together in a separately administered library. The application concerns that library; it is not enrollment in a course or a requirement to read the textbook. Each resource retains its applicable license.
